Position Overview
The school nurse provides healthcare services to students, promoting their physical, emotional, and social well-being. The nurse works to ensure a safe and healthy school environment, responds to health emergencies, and collaborates with parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals. The school nurse will help manage the day to day care of students. Care includes, but is not limited to, basic daily triage of students, ensuring medication is administered to students as needed, the management of students with higher medical needs, the ability to quickly assess a situation and determine the best course of action. The nurse should have the ability to work independently.

Terms: Full-time, non- exempt, starts August 2025
Hours: 7:30 a.m. - 4:00pm, school year
Job Responsibilities
Provides appropriate health care for students

Provide appropriate medical intervention to students who are injured or become ill during the school day, including on site school athletics.

Administer all prescription and nonprescription medicine using Colorado state guidelines.

Develop and implement care plans for students with chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, tracheostomy, seizure management) and ensure necessary accommodations are met.

Delegate student care under Colorado Nurse Practice Act, providing for training and supervision of delegated tasks.

Delegated tasks include but are not limited to epi pens, inhalers, diabetic care, seizure medications, tracheostomy care.
Fosters strong relationships with parents

Build and maintain positive, professional relationships with parents and guardians, fostering trust and collaboration in the care of their children.

Engage with parents and guardians in a firm yet empathetic manner, ensuring that both their concerns and the medical needs of their children are addressed.

Set and maintain professional boundaries with parents, providing clear explanations about policies, procedures, and care plans while showing understanding and respect for family dynamics.

Address difficult or sensitive situations with tact, while maintaining confidence in decision-making and adherence to school nurse guidelines.
Maintains health records and relevant medical history of students

Updates necessary health information including immunization records in the database system.

Follow up with parents about missing student health information.

Manages confidential information responsibly.

Maintains health log visits to the Health Office.

Orders and inventories all medical supplies.
Health Coordinator for all day trips and out-of-state field trips

Prepare and organize all required health-related paperwork, such as medical consent forms, emergency action plans, and medication authorizations for each student participating in trips.

Collaborate with and delegate medication to trip organizers and other staff to ensure that all health-related safety measures, including first aid supplies, are in place before and during trips.

Communicate with parents or guardians about any health-related concerns, special needs, or medication requirements for their child prior to the trip, ensuring all necessary consents and preparations are in place.

Be on-call for emergencies related to overnight trips.
Serve as the health consultant for the on-site ECLC (early childhood learning center) and aftercare programs

Provides monthly consultation for the ECLC per state licensing requirements.

Serves as a consultant on an as needed basis when health issues arise in these programs.

Signs off on and delegates annual trainings as required by state licensing.
Collaborate with teachers, parents, healthcare providers and medical director to ensure the health needs of students are met

Report back to appropriate teachers when a parent relays new health information.

Work with teachers when accommodations need to be made at school.

Maintains a relationship with the medical director in order to have standing orders for epinephrine and over-the-counter medications signed off on.
Crisis Management

Respond to health emergencies.

Help develop protocols for managing various health-related crises.
Advocacy for the health needs of students

Help promote a healthy school environment.
Health education and communications
-
Educate students, staff, and parents about health issues.

Co-teach the 5th grade annual puberty class with the wellness teacher.

Writes communications to the school community on important health issues, requirements due, alerts.

Provide annual first aid, epipen and other health trainings to employees.
Key liaison with city medical authorities

Manage and maintain relationships with the health department to ensure compliance to requirements and seek out recommendations.

Qualifications
-
Graduate from an accredited nursing program
-
Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree, required
-
Licensed as a registered nurse in the State of Colorado and in good standing with the Colorado State Board of Nursing, required

First Aid, CPR certified, required

Previous school nursing experience and/or experience working with pediatric population, preferred

Willingness to obtain CCHC (Childcare Health Consultant) status within one year of employment

Must obtain CPR/First Aid instructor certification within one year of employment

If a new school nurse, must attend School Nurse Orientation the summer after first year of employment

Compensation and Benefits
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience. Salary is between $75,000-$80,000 annually. Benefits include professional development, employer-paid health, vision, dental and life insurance, paid time off for school holidays and school vacations, as well as participation in a retirement plan.
