Job Description:

St. Mary’s Academy is seeking a Design, Making, and Faculty Coach Teacher. This is a full-time, 10-month, exempt position reporting to the middle school principal, beginning in August 2025. The ideal candidate brings an entrepreneurial, collaborative, inquisitive, and tinkering mentality. A strong passion for STEM/STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) instruction and the ability to positively coach faculty are essential to the position. A knowledge of shop work, basic machines, hand tools, and other technologies complement the role.  The position is responsible for: (1) teach 3-4 sections of STEAM-focused middle school electives, (2) grow maker and design skills in the faculty community through individual coaching, and (3) provide staff development.

Through regular conversations with their division principal and colleagues, St. Mary’s Academy teachers learn and understand their job responsibilities. It has been a hallmark of teachers throughout the history of SMA that their work goes beyond the classroom and includes not only the academic preparation of the student but also the emotional, social, and spiritual development of students. Additionally, teachers at St. Mary’s Academy are enthusiastic and energetic and they find support for new ideas. This enthusiasm is encouraged and applauded at SMA. Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences;
• Develop schemes of work and lesson plans;
• Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities;
• Prepare the classroom for class activities;
• Teach 3-4 sections of STEAM-focused middle school electives with a focus on foundational technology skills, making, engineering and design, robotics, and codings (.5 FTE);
• Maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development;
• Make the Middle School Maker Space an inviting, open and safe space for all in the SMA Community;
• Assist students, faculty, and the community to be successful in their projects by providing expertise and experience;
• Train students and faculty on tools and equipment within the Middle School Maker Space;
• Maintain the Maker Space facilities.  This includes but is not limited to:
  • Maintain (and repair when necessary) equipment
  • Order routine and project supplies
  • Manage and track of safety training for all users
  • Manage project storage
  • Maintain a clean and safe Maker Space for all users
• Serve as an instructional coach for teachers to model, design, and implement STEAM-based learning experiences across the school (.5 FTE);
• Oversee the development and vision of new Maker Space programs in partnership with school leadership
• Other tasks as assigned;
• Adhere to and support the mission of St. Mary’s Academy

All teachers are also responsible for a variety of duties and tasks throughout the day; the principal will make these assignments and share them with the faculty. These tasks and assignments change as the needs of the community are determined. 

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education and qualifications should include the following:

• Bachelor’s degree
• Master’s degree or teaching certification is strongly preferred
• Expertise/passion in STEM/STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math)
• 3+ years of teaching experience bringing grounded knowledge of best practices in the use of technology to personalize learning
• 2+ years of shop or maker space environment experience
• Understands the components of effective coaching and adult learning
• Experience with laser cutters, 3D printing, programming
• Understands the components of effective coaching
• Willingness to build and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues and parents
• Commitment to employing a positive, growth mindset to teaching
• A sense of resonance with the St. Mary’s Academy mission.

Salary/Benefits:

The salary range for this full-time, exempt position is $50,000.00 - $68,000.00. St. Mary’s Academy provides excellent benefits, including medical, dental, and life insurance, retirement, paid time off, tuition remission, and opportunities for professional development.
