Fountain Valley School, a selective and diverse boarding school, educates 250 students in grades 9–12 on a beautiful 1,100-acre campus in Colorado Springs, CO. Founded in 1930, the School provides a rigorous, global curriculum in academics, arts, athletics and the outdoors.
Position Summary:
Fountain Valley School seeks experienced and dynamic educators for an Ecology/Environmental Science teacher position. This position reports directly to the chair of the Science department and is responsible for teaching classes to students in 9-12 grade. Ecology is an integral part of our signature ninth grade program curriculum, and many students go on to enroll in Advanced Environmental Science as well as electives centered around ecology and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Teach 4 sections of Science.
- Demonstrate an ability to foster sustained collaboration and professional growth within a department.
- Show an appreciation for the craft of teaching along with a passion for Science as a discipline.
- Regular and reliable attendance.
- Coach two seasons of athletics/afternoon activities.
- Serve as an adviser to a small cohort of students.
- Participate in a class level retreat and help to lead a spring experiential learning trip.
- Participate in committees as assigned by school leadership.
- Participate in co-leading an Interim trip (Spring experiential learning trip)
- Transportation of students to and from activities using a non-CDL school vehicle
- Serve as a member of a weekend and weeknight dorm duty team (1 weeknight per week, and approximately 9 weekends per year)
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Ability to teach introductory and advanced principles of ecology and environmental science at a high school level
- Interest in project-based, inquiry-based, and interdisciplinary approaches to teaching science
- Field Experience in ecology or environmental sciences
- Openness to hands-on, technological, innovative and analytical elements in lesson plans
- Find joy in working with adolescents and in school life.
- Engage with energy, kindness, and a sense of humor.
- Experience enhancing classroom learning with appropriate math technology.
- Demonstrate cultural competency and skills engaging with and learning from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Demonstrate skills in communication and interpersonal relations within and across multiple constituencies.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and/or obtain a Colorado license within 30 days of hire.
- Bachelor’s degree with a major in the sciences; advanced degree and/or equivalent experience in an independent boarding/day school environment preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Environment: office and indoor classroom working with some outdoor events
- Physical demands: able to sit and stand for at least 8 hours per day; must be able to lift 40 lbs.
- Proficiency in LMS Blackbaud OnCampus and Google Educational Suite Apps preferred.
Salary: $40,000 - $60,000, based on education and experience
