Fountain Valley School, a selective and diverse boarding school, educates 225 students in grades 9–12 on a beautiful 1,100-acre campus in Colorado Springs, CO. Founded in 1930, the School provides a rigorous, global curriculum in academics, arts, athletics, and the outdoors.
The Opportunity:
Fountain Valley School (FVS) seeks an experienced and dynamic Director of Health Services. The Director of Health Services reports to the Dean of Community Life and will be responsible for student focused health services and will oversee the operation of the FVS Wellness Center. The candidate for this position must be a registered nurse or nurse practitioner and licensed to practice in the State of Colorado. This person will need to have direct experience with adolescent health; while also understanding the particular needs of students living in a boarding school environment. This is a 12-month, full-time position.
Primary Duties:
- Hire, train, staff, schedule and supervise Wellness Center staff to include registered nurses and CNAs.
- Supervise and/or administer primary care; provide assessments, examinations and referrals according to the medial directives
- Collaborate with the school physician, athletic trainers, etc., in establishing diagnosis, plan of care and evaluation.
- Collaborate with the Director of Counseling to assess counseling needs of students and to make appropriate referrals
- Provide appropriate recommendations to the Dean of Community Life regarding student assessments, counseling, follow-up care and medical leaves.
- Collect and assess data to make primary decisions on the health management of individual students, including reporting student attendance to the Dean of Community Life.
- Provide health education to students to assist them in coping with presenting issues
- Responsible for follow-up services, such as laboratory work, tests and referrals to specialists and therapists.
- Routinely act as a second-opinion consultant for nursing staff.
- Maintain state and school required medical records
- Patient and employee education, including CPR
- Provide on-call nursing support on a predetermined schedule that is also coordinated with Wellness Center staffing levels.
- Oversee the maintenance and necessary inventory to support the Wellness Center
- Maintain daily surveillance of emergency medical equipment and controlled substances
- Maintain proper state and federal licensing for dispensary and medical waste transportation, ensuring compliance with the DEA and other agencies
- Order and Maintain inventory of all medications, medical supplies and equipment, as needed, within budgetary parameters
- Analyze Wellness Center data i.e. # of visits, peak hours, diagnosis type etc., and share with the Administration in order to spot trends, emerging risks, and appropriate resource levels.
Other Duties:
- Attend faculty meetings and counseling group meetings
- Accompany students to medical appointments
- Update and maintain Wellness Center policy and procedural manual
- File annual state immunization survey and report cases of communicable diseases, as required by local, state and federal health departments
- Perform additional duties as directed, including those related to health education and the daily needs of a boarding school
- Initiate and maintain administrative functions of the Wellness Center through the use of information technology and electronic medical records as deemed appropriate by school administrators
- Perform annual evaluations of the nursing and med tech staff
- Contribute to the FVS community, integrating the Wellness Center with all aspects of school life
Qualifications:
- BSN required
- 10+ years of work experience, school-setting preferred
- RN or Nurse Practitioner licensed in the State of Colorado
- Current Healthcare Provider CPR and AED certification required
- Ability to become a CPR certified instructor
- Certification with NASN or willing to become certified
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and/or obtain a Colorado license within 30 days of hire.
Working Conditions:
- Environment: mainly indoors working with high school students
- Physical Demands: able to do a combination of sit, stand and lift up to 40 lbs for at least 8 - 12 hours per day; occasional after hours, weekend and/ or weeknight obligations.
- Working Relationships: students, parents, outside vendors and all other employees.
Salary: RN-BSN: $75,000-$90,000 or NP-MSN: $105,000-$120,000
